Mandarin Language Proficiency Levels
ACLS offers 9 different proficiency levels from Total Beginner to Proficient. A placement test at the beginning of the course will evaluate your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to ensure that you are placed in the appropriate class. Our 9 proficiency levels are:
Learn everyday basic conversational expressions such as how to greet and introduce others, ask for directions and express gratitude in Chinese. Classes at this level will introduce you to the fundamentals of the language such as pronunciation, sentence structure and written characters. Total
Beginner students are expected to have never learnt Mandarin.
Learn how to describe your personal interests and hobbies, how to talk to someone you've met for the first time, and what to say when you go shopping in Chinese. Classes at this level will expand your vocabulary with a more extensive variety of Chinese expressions whilst continuing to teach you the fundamentals of the language such as pronunciation, sentence structure and written characters.
Beginner students know more than 300 Chinese expressions and have already been introduced to the fundamentals of the language such as pronunciation, sentence structure and written characters.
Learn about Chinese culture and its diverse array of customs; learn how to plan a holiday and how to make comparisons between things such as the price, color and size of clothing in Chinese. Classes at this level focus on building your vocabulary to a greater depth and reinforcing major sentence structures whilst continuing to improve your listening, reading, and speaking skills.
Elementary students know more than 800 Chinese expressions and are familiar with the fundamentals of the language such as pronunciation, sentence structure, written characters and grammar.
Learn how to talk about the football match you saw last night, how to recommend a film to someone or what to say in a job interview. Classes at this level will teach you how to converse in Chinese using more complicated sentence structures. You will also learn about specific aspects of Chinese culture and customs such Beijing Opera and classic Chinese novels. Classes will expand your vocabulary and strengthen your command over Chinese grammar so that you are able to express yourself in a variety of different contexts.
Intermediate students know more than 1,500 Chinese expressions and have a firm grasp of Chinese grammar.
Learn how to hold more sophisticated discussions and raise complex questions about topics such as cultural differences, social changes and ancient Chinese poetry. Classes at this level will expand your vocabulary whilst reinforcing correct pronunciation, reading, listening comprehension, and conversational skills by reading newspapers and listening to news broadcasts in class.
Advanced students know more than 2,500 Chinese expressions and can express themselves using complex sentences and correct intonation.
Master the Chinese language and debate about a variety of complex contemporary issues. Classes at this level reinforce and perfect your command over the Chinese language by closely studying news reports, television programs and radio broadcasts in class.
Participants attending these classes know more than 3,500 Chinese expressions and can express themselves systematically using appropriate expressions and language norms.
